5 Tips for an Easy Move and Adaptation Period for Your Pet

5 Tips for an Easy Move and Adaptation Period for Your Pet

Are you worried about how your pet will deal with moving? You’re not alone! Many people become apprehensive at the idea of uprooting their dog or cat from their territory.

Thankfully, there are a few tricks you can apply to help them get used to their new environment and quickly feel at home. Here is some advice to make this transition easier.

1- Distract Them While You Pack the Boxes

While you are packing your entire life in boxes in the days preceding the move, your pet might start to feel nervous about the upcoming change. As you empty shelves and drawers, you are completely altering your home’s interior, which is a drastic transformation for your cat or dog!

To avoid having them anxiously cling to you and be in the way, take out their favourite toy and let play in the yard. This is a great way to calm them down.

2- Isolate Them in a Room While You Move Your Things

On D-day, your fur baby might get stressed by all the back and forth of the movers taking out the furniture. A practical solution is to isolate them in a room with their litter or training pad, food and water while you empty the old house and set up the new. Wait for everyone to have left before you open the door. In those first few minutes, they should be calm while they explore their new space.

3- Let Them Wonder Around at Their Own Pace

Moreover, when the time comes for your pet to get to know their new home, let them explore on their own. If you hover around them, they might get the impression that their new territory is somehow dangerous. Let them know that nothing has really changed and that they can pick up their usual routine in this new environment.

4- Pamper Them Those First Few Days

So that they feel positive about moving, give them plenty of treats during the first days so that they associate their new home with contentment. And don’t hesitate to buy them some new toys to keep them busy and reduce their stress levels! Furthermore, don’t wait too long to install the cat tree or dog bed. The sooner your pet has access to the things they love and know, the sooner they’ll settle in.

5- Follow the Same Routine

Get back to the old house’s routine as quickly as possible: go out for walks at the same time, place the litter box in a similar area and spend time playing and caressing them. Moreover, follow the same bedtime and morning routine so they adjust faster. In this way, your pet will take to their new residence like a fish to water!

If you follow these tips and let your furry companion got at their own pace, you’ll realize that they have adopted their new environment faster than you! However, if anxiety persists and your animal does not eat for two days, take them to your veterinarian. Also, don’t forget to update your pet’s identification tag with your new address.
